Zaharni Zavodi Plc
About us | For location of the new building was chosen a site in the vicinity of gorna oryahovitsa and owner of the sugar production concession given by the parliament became the "bulgarian - Czech sugar industry joint stock company" established on august 24,1912 in sofia. Among the founders of the company are: Eng. Rudolf pitzka, prague credit bank, prominent Czech industrialists and bankers, and the bulgarians vasil atanasov and dimitar baynov. Immediately after the first board of managers was elected, they bought a site of about 65 ha and the construction started. Shortly after that the balkan war broke out which caused a lot of problems but in the spring next year there was no doubt that the construction works would be over until the autumn and the plant would be ready for its first beet processing campaign. On december 8,1913 the first beet processing campaign commenced in the sugar factory of gorna oryahovitsa. This was the most modern factory for production of refined sugar in bulgaria; it was equipped with advanced technologies on a world level. In the years 1914 - 1930 under the management of eng. Pitzka the company rapidly developed and became one of the most modern production units in Bulgaria, which had a closed-cycle production and used almost waste-free technologies. In 1923, in order to make use of its own molasses - a waste product from sugar production, the company built a distillery, where potassium carbonate was also produced. The same year there was built a factory for production of ceramics and heaters. In 1924 the company built a shop for production of spodium - material which is necessary for the production of sugar. In 1926 at the distillery there was built a shop for production carbon dioxide. In 1927 the company acquired the obreshkov sugar products factory situated in the vicinity. The same year started the construction of a new factory for production of glucose, which should meet the needs of the sugar products factory. Thus at the end 1920-s rudolf pitzka builds a complex of factories and plants, which production nowadays will be called waste-free. Towards the end of july 1948 all factories owned by the bulgarian - Czech jsc were nationalized. The new state-owned company comprised of all factories of the jsc, excluding the coal mine and the "endge" seed-growing farm, which later on developed separately. Unlike most of the nationalized companies which were doomed to fail, "zaharni zavodi" experienced a second boom. In 1959/60 the sugar plant was generally reconstructed. In 1960 there was built a thermal-electric power station. Due to improvements made in the production process and its automation, in 1986 the sugar plant turned into the biggest sugar refinery on the balkan peninsula. The same year the distillery was thoroughly modernized. In the meantime some of the productions, such as the factory for glucose, the factory for ceramics and the shops for production of potassium carbonate and spodium, were closed down. In 1969/70 two new factories were built -engineering works and packaging plant. Today "zaharni zavodi" jsc is the biggest manufacturer of sugar and sugar products in Bulgaria. Situated on a site of 130 ha, the company consists of the following sections: - sugar plant; - sugar products plant; - distillery; - packaging plant; - engineering works; - thermo-electric power station. In the end of 2000 "sugar invest" jsc bought from the privatization agency 59.99% of the stocks of "zaharni zavodi" jsc. Two years later the state sold the remainder of the stocks and today the company is 100% privately owned. |
