Kmart opened Australia's first discount department store in Burwood. The year was 1969. The store was awash with ladies in pillbox hats and twin-sets. The car park was jammed with HD Holdens and Valiants. It was the dawn of a new era in Australian retailing. With over 40,000 customers passing through the checkout on the opening day, Kmart was an instant success. And we've never looked back. Today, Kmart operates 165 stores in Australia and New Zealand and provides employment for thousands of local residents. |
