The reasons are not far to seek, the primary ones being: 1. Ecological awareness and increased demand of non-classical therapies 2. Many undesirable side effects can escape. 3. High cost of modern drugs. 4. Extensive period of time (10-15 years), effort, costs required to develop a clinically acceptable drugs. 5. Inadequancy of modern drugs for so-called refractory diseases like amoebic dysentery, diabetes, degenerated disorders like rheumatoid arthritis, hepatitis. 6. Immuno-modulators and for wound healing. 7. Efficacy of herbal drugs and cost saving. 8. Gives naturally occurring drug intermediates 9. Back to nature movement. There is now a global interest and expanding market for plant based raw materials and herbal products for manufacture of drugs, pharmaceuticals, perfumery products, cosmetics, aromatic compounds for flavoring various food items. This resurgence of plant based medicines and products for health care is due to increasing realization that plant based materials are safer and cheaper than costly allopathic drugs having complexities and adverse side effect. The only way to address the problem would be to create captive plantations of important medicinal plants in a cost of effective manner. Such exercise would call for careful planning of the various component activities starting from site selection, application of propagation technology, management of the plantation, harvest, post harvesting, processing, packedging, and finally marketing. The large number of different species require different site, no uniform and universal calculus can be prescribed. The process of site selection has to be tailor made to meet the requirements of a particular species or group of species with ecological homogeneity. |
