Grameenphone was offered a cellular license in Bangladesh by the ministry of post and telecommunication in 1996. Grameenphone launcehed the first service with mobile phone on 26th march 1997. Aftyer 8 years of operation it has now more than 5 million customers. Grameen phone has a dual purpose to receive an economic return on investment and to contribute to the economic development of Bangladesh where telecom can play a vital role. In collboration with grameen bank, is aiming to place one phone in one village to contribute significantly to the society.
