Kaolin is a hydrated aluminium silicate(hydrouskaolin) with ahexagonal plate like shape. Accl kaolin's are very fine and easilydispersed offering optimum tio2 particle spacing that gives improvedopacity(hidingpower). Calcined kaolin's are produced by taking hydrous kaolin's and heatingin a kiln to around 1050 centigrade. Calcining causes the platy clayparticles to adhere together forming a harder and whiter irregularparticle shape. This irregular shape contains very small air pocketsthat cause light scattering and hence increased opacity whenformulated into paints above the critical pigment volume concentration(cpvc). The hard and irregular shape also means this extender isfirmly held in the paint film by the binder giving the paint excellentscrub and mudcrack resistance. This can be used as a partial replacement forexpensive titanium dioxide. Ultra fine hydrous kaolin suitable for gloss, semi-gloss, matt paints, and undercoats it can also be used in electricoat primers and printinginks. This material is 95% less than 2 microns in particle size. This ultrafine particle size gives improved opacity over its coarser rivalsavailable on the market.
